Chapter Five
Desire pooled in his belly, in his balls. Vinnie groaned into Bryan’s mouth, pretty sure he could get his hands under that skirt if he just reached a little farther…
“Get a room, fags!”
The shouted insult doused his arousal in an instant. The heat of desire morphed to a humiliation that burned. He sprang back from Bryan, some lingering fear from high school of his parents catching him doing “something gay”—brought back to life by seeing them for dinner, no doubt—sweeping over him, even though he knew it was asshole students yelling at them. His sudden push backward left Bryan off-balance and stumbling in his boots. The soft cry of pain Bryan let out as he fell ripped through Vinnie’s embarrassment and had him crouching next to Bryan on the grass.
He tried to help, reaching out to Bryan’s arm. Bryan knocked his hand away.
“Don’t.”
“I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean—”
“I am aware. And yet, here I am, on my ass again.” Bryan climbed back to his feet by himself, brushing off his skirt. He took a tentative step and winced, shifting his weight off that ankle immediately. “Shit.”
“Are you—” Hurt? Vinnie started to ask, only to look up and see they had company looming over them. Nasty company.
A tall, dark-haired guy stood next to a shorter blond kid. Their arms were crossed and they leaned back on their heels, identical sneers on faces twisted into ugliness. Two more guys in jeans and hoodies trailed behind them, hanging back.
“Hey, homos. Did we interrupt your make-out session?” The blond guy’s voice shifted into a singsong chant. “Two dirty faggots sittin’ in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G.”
Vinnie couldn’t believe it. What is this, fucking nursery school? But just like that time in Bryan’s hallway, he was so startled by the blatant bullshit that he could barely speak. Shit like this just didn’t happen at Carlisle.
“What the—” was all he managed to get out before Bryan was pushing him to the side. Stepping between Vinnie and the two closest harassers.
“Why don’t you back the fuck up, homeboy?” Every ounce of flirty femininity was stripped from Bryan’s voice, his hands curled into fists at his side.
Even wearing a skirt, it was clear in an instant that Bryan knew how to handle himself. The blond kid shoved his chest forward, refusing to back down, but the dark-haired guy sidled away to the corner of Vinnie’s vision.
Everyone’s voices grew louder, which Vinnie noted with a feeling of relief. Surely someone would hear them and the addition of a witness would put an end to this insanity.
But no one came. No other voices were raised besides Bryan’s and the blond kid, who suddenly reached out and pushed at Bryan’s shoulder.
Bryan’s fist pulled back. Vinnie lurched forward.
Someone’s tight grip closed on his elbow. Yanking him back. He’d lost track of the first guy who’d circled around them. Vinnie reminded himself that he was bigger than most of these guys and he didn’t need a fist to take someone out. He torqued his
